Morgan Stanley aims to ensure that our employees achieve their full potential without fear of discrimination or harassment based on their gender, gender identity or sex orientation. We also work with external LGBT+ community to actively engage in promoting the understanding of LGBT+.
Pride & Allies Network
The network is run by both LGBT+ and ally employees who voluntarily work to create a workplace environment that is free from any concerns about discrimination and prejudice due to sexual orientation or gender identity.
In June every year, we celebrate Pride month by running a global campaign collaborating with Pride & Allies network in the U.S. and other countries to raise awareness of LGBT+ in the workplace.
Please see Employee Network for more information.
Same-sex Domestic Partner Benefits
At Morgan Stanley, we strive to deliver inclusive policies and programs that cater to the needs of our diverse workforce. Our benefit programs enable employees in a same-sex domestic partnership or marriage to enjoy the equal or similar level of benefits as an opposite-sex marriage.
Transition in the Workplace
We have comprehensive guidelines for an employee who is undergoing the process of gender transition in the workplace. These guidelines support our transgender employees to make a successful gender transition and to ensure that they feel comfortable to be themselves in the workplace, without fear of discrimination or harassment.
There are also gender-neutral toilets and shower rooms on multiple floors for use in the office.
In order to promote the understanding of LGBT+ in the workplace, we offer various training and sessions by invited specialists and LGBT+ people. This training is for all levels across the firm, from junior employees to senior leaders, to learn about topics such as unconscious bias and the knowledge and skills which are essential to become active allies.
Engage with LGBT+ Community
We have sponsored and participated in the Tokyo Rainbow Pride and the Rainbow Reel Tokyo International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival for many years to support LGBT+ inclusion in our local community.
Furthermore, in August 2018, Morgan Stanley became an official member of the “Lawyers for LGBT and Allies Network” (LLAN) with the aim of achieving an equal and inclusive society by promoting the understanding of LGBT+ minorities by providing legal support to eliminate discrimination.
In May 2019, we expressed public support to The American Chamber of Commerce in Japan’s viewpoint to encourage the national government to approve legal marriage equality.
Recognition by Pride Index
In recognition of our efforts to support the LGBT+ community, we have been awarded Gold in the PRIDE Index, Japan’s first benchmark for assessing LGBT+ initiatives in the workplace since the index was established in 2016.
